A six-strong team from the Cornish Guardian, West Briton and Cornishman will put the pedal to the metal for a banger rally challenge and to raise money for good causes.

On Thursday evening the newshounds will swap notepads for street maps when they join 80 teams in the Barcelona or Bust Banger Rally Challenge, leaving the Cornwall Hotel Spa and Estate near St Austell.

It will be raising money for two Cornish charities – breast cancer charity Bosom Buddies and Cornwall Hospice Care.

Mike Jarvis, Alex Graves, Richard Whitehouse, Caroline Chick and Gareth Bartlett will be taking on the challenge in a Nissan Micra and Nissan Almera, which were donated by Town and Country Nissan, near Truro.

Mike Jarvis said: “We have spent months fundraising, planning and organising for this trip and I can’t believe the time has finally come. We are all really excited but at the same time quite apprehensive! Will our cars last the trip? We just don’t know!

“We are just hoping to raise as much money as possible for two worthwhile charities.”

The cars have been kindly decorated by Redruth-based Premier Signs, but we need readers help to raise as much cash as people for the charities.
