THE life of a Redruth footballer was saved by his young son.

Jack Adams, 8, squeezed through a cat flap to get to his dad Martin, who was lying unconscious and in a pool of blood after falling and banging his head.

Martin, the captain of Redruth United Reserves, was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital with a fractured skull.

According to his dad, Geoff Adams, Martin was making good progress.

He said: "It was touch and go at first, but he's on the mend now.

"When I saw him yesterday he said he wants to play football on Saturday, which clearly isn't going to happen."

Martin's wife, Tanya, and sons, Jack and Alfie, 3, had been away overnight, returning at about 9am on Sunday, and could see Martin lying on the floor of the dining room, with blood all around his head.

Geoff said: "The door was locked and the keys were in the door, so they couldn't get in.

"Jack managed to squeeze in through the cat flap to get to his dad and raise the alarm."

Martin's head had a 4in gash and was badly swollen.

Doctors considered sending him to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for specialist treatment, but decided they could deal with him locally.

Geoff said: "One of the doctors said if Tanya and the boys hadn't come home when they did, Martin wouldn't have had much of a chance.

"He would have bled to death."

It is believed Martin may have tripped while walking downstairs, possibly hitting his head on a banister.

Geoff said: "We're really proud of Jack.

"It frightened the life out of him when he went through the cat flap.

"He was afraid his dad was dead."

He added: "Since the accident I've had 136 messages on my phone wishing Martin well. I can't imagine how many he's had on his phone.

"Best wishes to Martin from Redruth United players and officials and many thanks to all the staff at Treliske Hospital."
