THE ISLES of Scilly Steamship Company has announced its appointment of a new chief executive.

Robert Goldsmith will take up his new position on February 4, replacing Jeff Marston, who said he planned to step down after 12 years in August 2013.

The company said that Mr Goldsmith has 24 years of experience in the transport industry, with a background including leadership roles at airports in Manchester, Bournemouth and Hull.

Company chairman Andrew May said it is a great time for the west Cornwall travel business.

“In its 10th decade the Steamship Group is in a particularly exciting time of its

development and so it is an excellent time for Rob Goldsmith to join us.

“To have attracted someone of his calibre is testament to the professionalism and

reputation of the Steamship Group.”

Mr May added the new chief executive has “impressive experience”, while he also thanked Mr Marston for his service over the years - including playing a key role in recent investment and expansion - and added he will continue to act as an advisor during the transition phase.

Mr Goldsmith said he was delighted with his new job and mentioned bold plans leading up to the company’s centenary in 2020.

“I am very excited about joining the group,” he said.

“I look forward to working in partnership with the communities on the Isles [of Scilly] and the

mainland to help make this happen.”

On Tuesday it was reported Land’s End Airport will close for two weeks in March as work to harden the runway goes ahead.

The improvements are to address major issues the airport has had with waterlogging of its grass airstrip.
