'Income tax cuts down to us', say Lib-Dems

Cornish Liberal Democrat MPs are keen to remind voters that cutting income tax for workers on low and average incomes was on the front page of the Liberal Democrats manifesto in 2010 and has been one of the party’s top priorities during Coalition Government negotiations.

The Government has increased the amount that people can earn each year without paying income tax to £9,400 – up from £6,475 in 2010/11 – and in April the Lib Dem manifesto commitment of raising the income tax threshold to £10,000 will come into force.

With Conservative Leader David Cameron now claiming that cutting income tax is part of his party’s economic plans, local Lib Dems have reminded the Prime Minister that he said during the 2010 General Election campaign that cutting income tax couldn’t be done.

St Austell & Newquay’s MP Stephen Gilbert said: “Taking two million people out of paying income tax and lowering it for 25 million of the lowest earners in society is one of the greatest achievements of the Liberal Democrats in government.”

Until they get their act together and actually do something to claw back all the tax avoided by those at the top they will never have any credibility. With those responsible for the recession still living the high life and even getting bonuses for failure while we are having to make do with frozen wages and price increases they cannot claim to be doing anything to level the playing field which is tipping even more in favour of the rich.

Its not only income tax we need to cut, its also about taking people out of poverty and increasing the minimum wage of £6 31 which is absolutely obscene. ! MP Stephen Gilbert says there are over 25 million lowest paid earners .... try living on under £12,000 a year with the cost of living increasing daily. What an indictment on the 5th richest country that we now a society so poor that we have to provide food banks for low income earners the elderly disabled etc . I despair at the way these politicians live in their ivory towers with rose tinted glasses. Shirley Sweeney

Here they go scrabbling around trying to justify their actions when all they have done is prop up a minority Tory government. It will be interesting to see how many of the sheep. who always seem to vote Lib Dem, will do so in 2015.

Notice there's no mention about the increase there's been in tuition fees. Lib- Dems promised in their manifesto not to raise them.
