VOLUNTEERS have been getting Helston ready for the Christmas lights switch-on next Friday.

Robert Williams, chairman of the Helston Christmas Lights Committee, said: "It's been quite a task getting the lights ready to go up this year. Thanks to a generous grant from the Helston Downsland Trust, we've been able to buy 1,200 metres of new festoon lighting which holds the bulbs that zig-zag down the main streets of town.

"We've had to attach supporting rope to it all, and connect new plugs and sockets too which has taken dozens of hours to get done.

"We've moved displays around, and there's new cross-street decorations outside The Bell and The Godolphin Club to look out for."

For the switch-on, the streets will be full with stalls, fun rides, entertainers and food and drink on offer from 5pm.

There will be a five-minute fireworks display in front of the Monument at 7.30pm, just as the lights go on.

Lady Street will be closed where it meets Five Wells Lane at 6.45pm. Bus services will also be disrupted as the main roads will be closed.

Mr Williams added: "The message is to get into town early and soak up the festive atmosphere. There will be plenty of hot food outlets trading and all the local cafés and restaurants will be staying open to cater for the masses."

He said Helston's lights are considered to be one of the best in Cornwall, adding: "Actually, according to Mick Timpson, who travelled on a coach from Scotland to Cornwall a few years ago, he classed our lights as the best in the UK.

"I'd personally like to thank my very loyal team of volunteers who give up their weekends to spend many hours carefully putting up the lights, and regardless of what ideas I have to improve the lights or change things around, they all muck in and get the job done."

He also thanked The Blue Anchor, Godolphin Club and The Park Café for providing refreshments to the team.

There is more festive fun planned for Helston over the next few weeks, with a skating rink in the Epworth Hall Garden from December 2 to 8 and Santa will be coming to town on December 20 for the annual Christmas Fayre.

Anyone wishing to make a donation towards the Lights Fund can send a cheque, made payable to 'Helston Christmas Lights', to 10 Meneage Street, Helston, TR13 8AB.
