A HELSTON pensioner accused of indecently assaulting and raping a young girl, has told a court he would never harm a child.

Giving evidence on the third day of his trial at Truro Crown Court on Wednesday, 68-year-old Terrence Williams denied that he had touched the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, indecently.

Williams, a former electrical fitter’s mate at RNAS Culdrose, is accused of 12 counts of indecently assaulting and raping a girl between 1988 and 1996.

Adrian Chaplin, defending, asked how he felt and Williams said he was worried about the allegations.

Mr Chaplin said: “Are the allegations true?” Williams responded: “No.”

Mr Chaplin asked Williams, of Trengouse Way, about a number of alleged incidents of indecency and rape and to each of them Williams replied: “That’s not true.”

He described being shocked, upset and horrified when the police arrived at his house in September 2012 to arrest him.

The woman, who is now in her 30s, contacted police in May 2012. She told the court the abuse started when she was aged under-10 and continued for a number of years.

Jason Beal, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said the she had told a number of people about what was happening to her and that she was video interviewed by police in April 1996.

Police began an investigation at the time and arrested Williams but a decision was made in 1996 not to charge him with any offences.

Speaking about his 2012 arrest, Williams said: “I thougt all that had been put to bed in 1996 and I did not know it still existed.”

Closing the case for the prosecution, Mr Beal said to the jury: “In this case [the girl] says that she was sexually abused.

“Terrence Williams says nothing of the sort; in fact it is me that is the victim of false lies, concocted to get me into trouble. This is a black and white case isn’t it?

“Either [the girl] is telling the truth about what happened or Terrence Williams is telling the truth about what happened.”

Williams, who denies all of the charges, is accused of eight counts of indecent assault on a girl aged under-14 between July 1988 and April 1996.

He faces four charges of raping the same girl between July 1994 and April 1996.
