HELSTON Chamber Choir is preparing for its first concert on Saturday evening under its new musical director.

The concert is called From Darkness Into Light, and is based on a journey from winter's gloom into a bright new spring.

Director Rico Gerber, who arrived in Cornwall with his wife from South Africa in 2000, is also in charge of New Cornwall Opera and accompanist for Truro Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society and Mabe Ladies' Choir.

The choir will open with Bach's Jesu Priceless Treasure, followed by Gesualdo's Morro Lasso. Other works include Totus Tuus, composed by Polish Henryk Górecki for Pope John Paul II in 1987, Concerto For Choir by Rachmaninov and two pieces by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo.

In support are mezzo-soprano Shirley Tyack, singing works by Brahms and Richard Strauss, and the Wellington Quartet who will support the choir and also perform pieces by Rutter and Mozart. Ruth Bray will accompany the choir on piano and organ.

From Darkness Into Light will be in St Michael's Church, Helston, at 7.30pm. Tickets on the door are £10 or £8 from Heathercraft in Coinagehall Street or on 01326 574542/572410.
