A school in Hayle has bucked a nationwide trend with 100% of its 2013 leavers going on to further education or work.
With over one million 16-24 year olds classed by the Government as not in education, employment or training (NEETs), Hayle Community School can boast no students from last year’s leavers in the category.
Head teacher, Christine Jackman, said the school has worked to build links with local businesses to help students progress after their GCSEs.
Hayle school’s Moving On programme provides students with impartial advice and guidance on all the opportunities available to young people.
This includes visits from external professionals, potential employers, visits to colleges, interview and application form training, work experience and career advice.
Mrs Jackman continued: “As a school we take our responsibility for enabling our students to move onto the next phase of their life very seriously, employing a dedicated careers advisor two days a week.
"To have 100% of our recent leavers either in employment, training or further education is evidence that our rigorous programme for Year 10 and 11 students is making a real impact on their lives.”
Hayle has seen significant development over recent years including the Harbour Project, West Cornwall Retail Park and the Asda site, which is creating new opportunities within the town and community.
School leaver, Jack Nicholas, capitalised on a local business opportunity and took up an apprenticeship with local firm Hawkins Motors.
He said: “I have always wanted to be a mechanic but I knew further education was not for me. When I heard about the apprenticeship scheme at Hawkins I knew this is what I wanted to do. I am learning so much on the job and I am also sent on training courses.”
Hayle Town Councillor and school governor, John Coombe, said given the pressures on young people these days it was a tremendous achievement for the school.
He added: “It shows how committed the students are and I am extremely proud to be a governor. I commend the work of the school on reaching this standard of education.”
