A large chunk of the harbour wall at Lamorna was smashed away by the ferocious waves this morning.

The crashing waves also caused a considerable amount of damage elsewhere in the cove – the shed doors by the slipway were all ripped off, the terrace of the Lamorna Cove café was severely damaged, areas of surfacing in and below the car park were swept away and storm surges deposited large rocks and stones all the across the car park.

Daniel Stevenson, who owns the café, said that several cars had lucky escapes.

“People were still driving down here to have a look at things between the gaps when the waves were coming in,” he said.

“We managed to get one lady to turn round and drive off just in time because as she drove away the waves came in lifted up the back of the car.

“Two other cars floated around in the car park and another one turned around completely.”

Mr Stevenson said that the roof to his terrace had been battered and damaged by waves and that the terrace area had completely filled up with water to the height of the three feet surrounding wall.

"Several cars had lucky escapes"?? No doubt from parking fines for being not quite between the lines!
