The highest accolade in English tourism has been awarded to Gwel an Mor, the 5 star holiday resort from Portreath. The self-catering resort were bestowed with the title of the UK's best Holiday Village in the prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2012.

A team representing the resort traveled to Leicester for the lavish ceremony which was held in the stunning art-deco Athena venue in Leicester on 22nd May. The 34 Gold and Silver winners were selected from a shortlist of 69 finalists, judged by a panel of tourism industry experts including VisitEngland Board Member David Orr and travel broadcaster Alison Rice.

The Gwel an Mor resort was highly praised for the exceptional quality of the resort and facilities provided, high levels of customer care service and very friendly staff. The ongoing improvement and evolution of the resort were also highly commended with special mention of the latest luxury development, The Residence, now providing guests with the opportunity to own their own piece of Gwel an Mor. The judges also commented on the resort's wildlife and conservation programme, Feadon Farm,  noting this as a 'highlight' where "passionate and knowledgable staff offer a range of activities enoyed by most visitors".

"I am very proud of the achievement not only for GwelanMor, but for Cornwall too. It is great to be recognised for what we do to a national level and especially to be associated with the word "excellence". This demonstrates that hard work, passion and determination pays off and I am very grateful to be part of such a dedicated team. This type of achievement would not be possible without the support of our staff of course  but also the trust that Mr Bill Haslam, Owner of GwelanMor has in all of us" commented Nico Descotes, General Manager at Gwel an Mor.

With a 20 plus year history, the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence recognise businesses that incorporate best practice throughout their operation and also celebrate the very best quality and innovation, helping to raise standards across the industry and secure England's - and now Cornwall's - place as a world-class holiday destination.

Bill Haslam, Managing Director at Gwel an Mor, said: "We are delighted that Gwel an Mor has been recognised with the VisitEngland award for excellence, a truly impressive national award with some immense competition. Winning the title of England's best Holiday Village is an amazing and well deserved achievement and I am so proud of our dedicated staff who have really earned this award. With the Olympics and Jubilee this is a great year to win, with all eyes on Britain and now the focus is on our own little picturesque piece of Cornwall"

This national award has now been added to the many other accolades the resort has achieved in the past and once again brings a surge of pride to the Cornish tourism industry proving yet again, our county is leads the way.
