Funding will help villagers to tempt more tourists

THIS week sees the launch of tourist information points at businesses in St Agnes and local tourism ambassadors guiding visitors.

The chamber of commerce is spearheading the project after being awarded £28,000 by VisitCornwall's Seaside Towns initiative.

Kath Williams, from Portreath, who has a background in marketing and community projects, will implement the Bolstering St Agnes project.

If successful, the tourist points may be rolled out across the county.

Chamber member Sasha Dobrota said Miss Williams's key tasks would be to develop branded information points, train businesses and invite locals to be tourism ambassadors.

"It's the start of an exciting project. Kath has plenty of experience to drive it forward," she said.

Plans for a mobile phone app allowing people to download local information have been put on hold, however, and instead visitors will be able to find information via a website, due to be launched shortly.

A new festival may be organised for the October half-term.

Mrs Dobrota said the aim was to increase footfall year-round. "We're working with the World Heritage Site, the National Trust and the RNLI to see where we can add value," she said.

Miss Williams said: "People are keen to capitalise on St Agnes's appeal. Locals are great ambassadors and willing to promote their village."

Bolstering St Agnes could also be expanded to other areas in the parish, she added.
