PEOPLE in Helston, Porthleven and the Lizard can get up to 10 sandbags from Cornwall council staff today from 1pm.

They will be handing them out at the boating lake car park, Coronation Park, in Helston.

It follows yesterday’s Government decision to enable local authorities to recover the costs of distributing free sandbags.

The council has been working with its partners to identify the areas in Cornwall which are currently at the greatest risk of flooding.

In accordance with the latest advice from the Met Office and the Environment Agency, the council is distributing up to 1,000 sandbags in Helston, which also includes Mullion and Porthleven areas.

Members of the public in these areas will be able to collect up to 10 sandbags from these locations from 1pm today.

Other ares include Penzance, Wherry Town car park, Looe, Millpool car park, and Bude’s Crescent car park.

“Over the past few hours we have been working with our partners to identify the areas which are at greatest risk of flooding as a result of today’s severe weather conditions” said Peter Marsh, interim director of Environment.

“Sandbags are being distributed in these areas so they are prepared for tonight’s high tide. For operational reasons sandbags will not be available directly from council depots.

“The weather conditions are then set to improve tomorrow afternoon and into next week giving us a respite from the risk of flooding.

“We will, however, continue to monitor the situation and are on standby to respond if the weather deteriorates.”
