PENZANCE is very definitely open for business!

Roads into the very centre of town are closing this morning as traders set up stalls for the shopping and food extravaganza going on around the Christmas Lights switch on.

The Town Council have also secured free parking all day today (and on every Saturday running up to Christmas!) on all Cornwall and Town Council car parks.

At 8am this morning a festive Christmas market was already taking shape in the town centre with stalls selling all manner of local produce and crafts.

From 12 noon there will be entertainment on Causewayhead and by the Humphry Davy Statue as well as Father Christmas in his sleigh at the Greenmarket where there will also be a carousel ride for the small children and face-painting.

Market Jew Street, Causewayhead, The Greenmarket and part of Alverton Street will be closed to traffic.

There will be free Parking in Penzance Penlee House, Harbour, St Erbyns, Wherrytown, Causewayhead, Clarence Street, Greenmarket, Longrock, Penalverne and St Anthony's car parks.

The Mayor and his entourage will travel through the town in a horse-drawn Victorian omnibus and will be switching on the lights as follows:

4.15pm Wharfside Shopping Centre

4.30pm Christmas Tree at Humphry Davy Statue (Market Jew Street)

5.00pm Causewayhead (outside Causewayhead Furnishings)

The final switch-on will be followed by the drawing of the Grand Christmas Lights Raffle.

Lots of prizes have been donated by local retailers and businesses.

Raffle tickets are available from the Town Clerk's Office (Alverton Street), Alfred Smith's (Alverton Street), Walker's Jewellers (Causewayhead) and the Welcome to West Cornwall Centre (by the bus station).

*Free parking - throughout the run up to Christmas shoppers can park for free in all Town Council and Cornwall Council car parks all day on Saturdays and on Thursdays from 4pm for late night shopping.
