Flats plan for former Falmouth post office set for go ahead

PLANS to turn an historic building in Falmouth’s town centre into high-end accommodation for “single people or couples with no children” have been recommended for approval by planning officers.

Developers plan to turn the two upper floors of the former Post Office site on The Moor into seven, two-bedroom flats.

Falmouth Town Council recommended refusal of the plans when they were submitted in October by Cengiz Rifatcorr.

But planning officers have recommended that it goes ahead, provided developers pay £7,245 – £1035 per residential unit – towards local public open space infrastructure as part of a section 106 agreement.

A report to the central sub-area planning committee, which will the final decision when it meets on Monday, said: “Subject to conditions relating to materials and detailing, the provision of the cycle and refuse storage and the layout to the rear amenity terrace areas, the development is considered to be acceptable and is recommended for conditional approval with the associated section 106 agreement to ensure the reasonable financial contribution towards off-site open space infrastructure.”

The former post office, built in the 1920s, closed in January 2011 and the ground floor has since been occupied by the Prezzo restaurant.

If recommendations by planning officers are accepted, the Core Fitness Centre would lose its home.

The planning application states: “Given the site’s highly accessible location and the lack of dedicated car parking, the units are most likely suitable for single people or couples with no children.”

The plans do not propose external works to the main building.

Falmouth Town Council refused the application on the grounds that it would set a precedent for future residential planning applications in the town centre.

It added that The Moor was not the right place for apartments and that it would prefer to see the property turned into commercial or municipal use.
