Comments (1)

West Cornwall firefighters dealt with two chimney fires last night.

In the first incident, at Prosper Hill, Gwithian, one appliance attended at around 8.15pm with the Camborne crew dealing with it using chimney gear.

An hour and a half later, there was another chimney fire at Park Bottom, Redruth.

The person calling the alarm reported flames coming out of the wood burner in the property.

As a result two appliances from Camborne and Redruth attended along with an officer. The fire was out on arrival and confirmed as accidental and confined.

If your chimney is regularly swept it will not catch fire. It really is time fire brigades charged to deal with unswept chimney fires. Those of us who pay our council tax and sweep every autumn are subsidising those who don't. It should not be a 'get-out-of-gaol' free service.
