A fire started in the maternity wing in Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske earlier this morning.

Firefighters from Truro were called to the hospital just before 3am in response to a fire alarm sounding and reports of a smell of burning.

On arrival at the Princess Alexandra Maternity unit, crews found there had been a small fire in the air handling unit.

A spokesman for Cornwall Fire and Rescue said: “Crews used a thermal imaging camera to confirm the fire was out and carried out an inspection only.”
