Reports of an earthquake that has affected Cornwall are emerging.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed an earthquake took place in the Bristol Channel at around 1.30pm.

A spokesman for the BGS said: "We're getting reports from Cornwall, Devon and South Wales.

"The epicentre of this earthquake was approximately 18 km north of Ilfracombe in North Devon and around 30 km southwest of Swansea in South Wales."

The earthquake had a depth of 5km and was confirmed at 4.1 on the Richter scale.

A measurement of 4.1 counts as a "light" earthquake whereby there is noticeable shaking of indoor objects and rattling noises. It would be felt by most people in the affected area.

A light earthquake would generally cause none to minimal damage with moderate to significant damage very unlikely.

Some objects may fall off shelves or be knocked over.

Steve Crook, based in Cornwall, said on Twitter: "Just experienced my first earthquake. Made my monitor tremble and there was a low rumble."
