Social enterprises are not charities and are revenue driven, but instead of profits feeding anonymous shareholders, social enterprises have clearly defined social, community or environmental aims.

In Cornwall, there are an estimated 450 to 1,000 social enterprises, ranging from micro-start-ups to headline-making social ventures, such as Eden Project and Fifteen Cornwall.

Their concentration in the county and the fact that start-ups outstrip those of small businesses made it a perfect choice to become the UK's first rural social enterprise zone.

The designation is intended to increase the participation of young people, deliver a more sustainable Cornwall, improve diversity and make the county a more prosperous place.
