A GIRLS’ football team from Newquay is a whisker away from raising enough cash for an “experience of a lifetime” trip to America.
Newquay Ladies FC Under 16's need £18,000 to fly to Florida to take part in the Fort Myers International Football Tournament in April.
Thanks to a recent donation of £500 by Indian Queens construction firm Midas, the soccer-mad youngsters are now just £3,000 short of their target.
They have three major events planned for this month – an Eighties disco evening, a live music night and a family fun day and dog show – that they hope will see them over the goal line.
Fundraiser Shelly Cook, whose 13-year-old daughter Megan plays for the team, said the girls had been working hard to collect money since November, and called on the local community to help them raise the full amount.
She told the Cornish Guardian: “It will be an experience of a lifetime for the girls. It will be brilliant for their confidence and potentially their future careers in sport. They’re so excited to be given the chance to go and we need all the support we can get to make their dream a reality.”
Pete Butterly, Chairman of Newquay AFC, said: “Thank you to everyone who has donated over the past few months, and many thanks to Midas for its support and for the sponsorship of the team kit.
“The girls have done a terrific job in raising so much money but we’re not there yet. If anyone would like to help the team make this trip of a lifetime a reality, please contact me or the club.”
Mike O'Neil, Midas Construction divisional director for Cornwall and Devon, said: "We are delighted to play a part in helping the Newquay Ladies to compete in America. Midas has worked across the South West for many years and is committed to supporting communities, clubs and societies across the region whenever we can.
“Many thanks to Chris Hoskin our site manager, and father to team member Abbey, for making us aware of this great opportunity."
The first fundraising event this month is an Abba's Angels and Eighties disco night at Sailors Nightclub, on Saturday, March 8. Tickets cost £10.
Next up is a Family Fun Day and Dog Show the following day, on Sunday, March 9, at St Columb Minor Recreation Ground.
Finally, on Thursday, March 13, the girls are holding a ‘Florida or Bust’ night of live music at Sailors. Tickets cost £4 in advance or £5 on the door.
