DOZENS of jobs could soon be created in St Austell with news of a KFC open in the town.

The St Austell Guardian can reveal a mystery local developer will be submitting plans for the fast food giant on the A390 at Holmbush in the next couple of weeks.

If all goes to plan, the 2,500sq ft 60-80 seat restaurant – including a drive thru – could be open before the end of the year, creating 35 jobs.

"This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for St Austell," said the developer. "KFC doesn't want to come into the town centre and we think we've got the perfect site."

KFC currently has two stores in Cornwall – in Penzance and Newquay – with another planned for Bodmin in the future. Hundreds of thousands of pounds will be invested in the St Austell restaurant, on the site of the Holmbush Cafe.

"The building there at the moment is an eyesore," said the developer.

"That is one of people's first impressions as they drive into St Austell. You come down the bypass with those beautiful sea views, turn onto Holmbush Road and see that. It's awful and we want to improve it.

"Domino's Pizzas and Blockbuster have both been interested in the site, but we're glad it's KFC.

"We've spoken to thousands of people in the last three years and virtually every one of them wants to see a KFC.

"Lots of people from St Austell drive to Plymouth or Newquay just to eat there.

"It's a huge investment in St Austell and shows my commitment to the town. I think it's exactly what the town needs."

A public consultation meeting is being held on Monday (23) at Cuddra Village Hall between 4.30pm and 7.30pm.

why does holmbush need another fast(junK) food outlet. The pub, fish/chips,chinese is more than sufficient for such a small community. It is a very poor site for such a takeaway ,just so the passing traffic can go to the first fast food outlet on reaching St Awfell. Apart from the usual complaints, I fear for the emergency services trying to respond to 999calls especially with the introduction of the speed reduction bollards Anyone who craves a cfk can still drive to plymouth or newquay so long as they stay away from my doorstep

Thank you for pointing out my obvious mistake. I'm sure it would seem prosperous to many people, however I meant to say completely preposterous.

Completely prosperous eh? Yes, I suspect that is why they chose that location, to make money and increase prosperity...
