THE DIVER who surfaced unconscious in waters around the Isles of Scilly has died.

The London man was airlifted to Treliske after emergency services were alerted at 9.43 on Wednesday morning, but was later confirmed dead.

It is believed the 49-year-old was on a diving holiday at the time of the incident.

He was one of two taken to hospital at the scene, just off St Mary's island, with the other thought to have come up too quickly and suffering from decompression sickness - also known as the bends.

The second diver was taken to a special unit in Plymouth but their condition is unknown.

Police have reported they are investigating but the circumstances are not thought to be suspicious.
