Divas has adult entertainment licence removed
| Posted: December 17, 2009
A NEWQUAY lap dancing bar can no longer provide nude adult entertainment, following a review of its licence by Cornwall Council and town police.
Yesterday's review into the licence of Divas Lap Dancing Club, on Gover Lane, heard how the club had broken rules on a number of occasions, including the employment of a 17-year-old girl as a dancer, the "flagrant breaking of the three-foot rule" as well as "extremely positive tests" for cocaine being used in the club's toilets.
In the meeting, which lasted more than six hours, police showed footage taken from an officer's head-cam and questioned one of the club's licence holders about the rule breaking.
The club has 21 days to meet the new rules, but could choose to appeal against the decision.
Should an appeal be lodged, the club will be able to continue as a lap dancing club until a decision has been reached.
The news comes just months after Divas had the three-foot rule – where dancers were not allowed to go within three feet of customers - imposed on it by Liskeard Magistrates Court.

Could you please alter the last comment to ( part owned ) thanks . Also the spelling says owed and should say owned
Divas is owed by a LOCAL company that employes over 200 people and has spent millions of pounds over the last 30 years in the local community . All profits over the years have been reinvested in the businesses and as a result of that many many local companies have benefited. Some people for some crazy reason seem to think its a crime to make money. We over the 30 years have always had a good relationship with the police , fire and council . We have always had a policy of working with them . The council and the government have received a fortune over the years in rates and taxes from us, so we feel we are not as bad as some people are trying to make us out to be . As far as Divas is concerned we had no problems in the first two years. We had many visits from the police and licensing with no problems . The a review was brought because of one ladies personal view on lap dancing . We had had no problems prior to that. No drunkenness no fights no drug problems. And whats more we were not breaking the law. We will make a statement in the local papers in the next couple of weeks about all that has happened .
This is all such a non issue, no one is forced to either visit or work their and people hae the right to choose how they live their life, its called Freedon of Choice. Divas is getting a hard time on the back of a sustained campaign from a vocal minority. The recently formed Newquay Residents association needs to decide if it is against alcohol fuelled anti social behaviour by young visitors. Or lap dancing. Because the type of people visiting Diva's are not the ones rampaging through the streets at night. By campaigning against both they just seem to be anti fun prudes who are determined to kill off what left of our once FUN town. Remember when we used to be cited as the fouth best place in the World to celebrate New Years eve? those were the days. The bitter irony is that the publicity generated by this special interest campaign group has actually attracted more of the people we dont want (irresponsible youths who are too young to get in any club and certainly couldnt afford Divas, so cause havoc in the streets), and discouraged the people we do want (more affluent responisble people looking for a vibrant party atmosphere in quality clubs). Newquay always has been a Party town and there is nothing wrong with that. 10 to 15 years ago the pubs and clubs were much busier than they are now so why did people move to Newquay if they couldnt handle that?
What's wrong with being a crazed women's libber anyway?? It was "crazed women's libbers" who campaigned to get women the vote, to outlaw rape within marriage, to get equal pay, to get better maternity rights for women, to stop the sexual commodifcation of women's bodies. If that makes me a "crazed women's libber" then I'm proud to be one. Derogatory terms like that are only used by men who are threatened by women.
Well said Fred! and James, Elizabeth and Newquay Maid! Good sense has prevailed in Newquay at last! Divas have only themselves to blame. They've been caught on a hook made of their own arrogance. And yet they still wriggle!
It was the police and the licensing panel that brought Divas down NOT any crazed women's libbers. simplesz ! It was NOT a morality issue. Divas have only themselves to blame. It has been encouraging to hear so many men (not the crazed women's libbers...note) talking such sense. Especially James, "Had enough" and Dave Sleeman. Divas?...time to admit defeat and slink off . Your arrogance has finally got the better of you. Be gone with you!
Newquay Maid - MY comments are boringly cliched? Why don't the so-called 'campaigners' in Newquay move into the 21st Century and get rid of their own cliched view of men as neanderthals? What kind of night-time economy, could I ask, do you think Newquay should have? You and your merry band of campaigners are slowly outlawing drinking through the night, hot food through the night, entertainment through the night. What will soon be the alternative? There won't be anything for anyone to do at night and then we'll see how many people accidentally fall of cliffs or drown in the sea with no-where else to go. One more point - Women don't HAVE to work in lap dancing clubs they CHOOSE to, I know several and that's the main difference. PS While we're on the subject of definitions, the dictionary definition of a maid is a 'female servant' Go figure ...
I am slightly confused as to why Divas are suggesting that I look up sexual establishments in Australia to see that there are many around. I didn't think that Divas was claiming to be a "sexual establishment" and the lap dancers don't like to be put into the category of "sex workers". So Divas....are you a sex establishment or not? You can't seem to make up your mind what it is you are offering. A sex establishment when it suits and not a sex establishment when you don't want to pay £30k for a sex encounter establishment licence.
Divas! Divas! Divas! You have been the architects of your own downfall - you are making me laugh now with your railing against prudishness! I love naked women however they're put together Mr Hunt (whatever your name is!!!!!!) Cocaine is not the problem you see - minor aside. More to do with thinking you are above the law and then finding you aren't. It seems obvious to me, with the change in the law, that the majority of the people don't like women being sold - bit like when people said slavery wasn't such a good thing. There were a few who were flabbergasted - now we wonder how it was EVER possible. Let's move forward - and treat everyone as an eual. That would be nice.
And maybe Divas could put lap dancing newquay into google to remind themselves of what is really on offer in Newquay. But they know that already. They have simply been caught out providing it in Newquay outside of the confines of the law.
