THERE is clearly something romantic about the annual Helston Harvest Fair.
A large number of couples celebrating marital milestones speak of meeting each other for the first time at the end-of-summer event.
And it is no different for Gordon and Irene Kemp, of Mullion, who have just celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
"We met at Helston Harvest Fair and got married two years later," said Mrs Kemp. A Mullion girl, she was working at the village's Cove Hotel as a chambermaid and her husband, who came from Carnkie, worked on Predannack Farm before moving onto his own farm.
They were married at Mullion Methodist Chapel and held their reception in the Sunday School – the ladies of the chapel made their wedding cake.
The couple have two children, Sheila who lives in Wiltshire, and Peter who also has a farm at Predannack, and three grandchildren, Charlotte, James and Elizabeth.
The family keeps the couple busy. Mrs Kemp said: "I am proud of them all."
She believed the recipe for a long and happy marriage was "getting on with each other".
She and Gordon celebrated their 60 years together with an open house at their Nansmellion Road home attended by friends and family.
