THE Helston area remains a safe one "and long may that continue", said the new inspector in charge at the town's police station.

It is a return to the patch, one of the biggest in the Devon and Cornwall force area, for Inspector Mark Eccles.

He has taken over from Inspector Lyn Gooding, who has moved on to new duties.

Mr Eccles, who is also responsible for the Camborne, Redruth and Pool area as well as Helston, the Lizard, Porthleven and area, said one of his priorities would be to increase efforts to prevent more deaths on the region's roads.

Last week Camborne cyclist Paul Kemsley, 54, died following a crash with a van on the A30 near Tolvaddon, and in Penryn a 26-year-old woman was killed in a collision.

He said traffic regulations would be enforced more rigorously following the recent spike in the number of fatal and serious accidents.

"We are increasing awareness around the road traffic regulations and highlighting the use of mobile devices and speed," he said.

"This means we will have more regular stop checks and we will put more officers to those places where accidents have happened or are likely to happen."

Drivers face a fine and three points on their licence for using a mobile phone while behind the wheel.

Mr Eccles, who started his new role last month, also spoke to councillors about his vision for the future.

He said frontline staff policing would not be affected by budget cuts and he wanted to work closely with partner agencies to resolve issues such as antisocial behaviour.

"It is about giving people a better quality of life and engaging with the local community whether they are policing issues or not and tackling them together.

"There's no comparison between here and Birmingham where I was stationed before I moved here in 2004. It is much safer here and long may that continue."
