Servicemen from RNAS Culdrose carried out a courageous rescue mission to bring an injured fisherman to safety.

A crewman on the Spanish fishing boat, Novo Alborada, suffered a dislocated shoulder out at sea.

The call first came in to Falmouth Coastguard at approximately 3am today. The boat was 160 miles west of the Isles of Scilly and the crew were told to head for the islands.

The Rescue 193 team from RNAS Culdrose were mobilised at approximately 5.30am and winched the man from the vessel at approximately 7.30am.

The boat was still approximately 140 miles out at sea when the rescue took place.

A spokesman for Falmouth Coastguard said: “Conditions were pretty rough out there at the time.”

The fisherman was brought to Culdrose and then transferred on to the Royal Cornwall Hospital for treatment.
