Sithney Parish Councillor Brian Deacon in court on child sex charges

A PARISH councillor and founder of a wrestling club has appeared in court accused of committing sexual offences against children.

At Truro Magistrates' Court on Thursday morning Brian Deacon, of Merther Close, Sithney, near Helston, faced six allegations of touching children aged under 13 between 2011 and last year.

He did not enter any pleas.

Deacon, aged 69, is a Sithney parish councillor and a founder of Sithney Wrestling Club, which now meets at the Epworth Hall in Helston. He was accompanied in court by a member of staff from the Longreach House mental health unit in Redruth.

The court heard he had sought help voluntarily from the organisation.

His solicitor also asked that Deacon, who appeared frail and unsteady, be allowed to sit in the court rather than in the glass-screened dock. The court agreed to the request.

Deacon was asked if he wished to enter pleas in relation to the offences but said he did not want to enter any at this time.

Alison May, for the prosecution, said she did not think the magistrates' court was a suitable venue for the case, given the seriousness of the allegations.

The court agreed and declined jurisdiction, referring the matter to Truro Crown Court for a first hearing on Tuesday to set a date for trial.

Deacon had appeared in court on police bail. This was replaced with unconditional bail by the court.
