The councillor, who falsely claimed to have been appointed a Member of the British Empire, has begun the process of his resignation.

Terry Wilkins, who claimed that he was a victim of an “elaborate and malicious hoax”, also admitted to having never received an Open University Degree in Health and Wellness as he had previously stated.

He said: “I have resigned from the group and association.

“I am waiting instructions from my legal team on the way to formalise my councillor resignation.”

After an investigation by the West Briton it was discovered that Mr Wilkins had never been awarded an MBE and instead said that he was set up by a former colleague back in 1995 while working in the Metropolitan police service.

He said that he received a medal in the post but decided not to attend the investiture at Buckingham Palace and instead put the medal away in a drawer.

Stuart Odgers, from the Camborne and Redruth Conservative Association, said: “The Camborne and Redruth Conservative Association has conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations surrounding Concillor Terry Wilkins.

“Following these investigations Councillor Wilkins has tendered his resignation which has been accepted.

“We would like to thanks Mr Wilkins for his hard work as our county councillor working on behalf of the residents of Illogan and also for his dedication in supporting individuals and various organisations dealing with learning disabilities throughout the county. “

On Mr Wilkins’ professional profile on the website LinkedIn he listed that he had a pending degree in Health and Wellness from the Open University.

He later stated that he was completely innocent regarding the matter and was actually playing a game with another person who was jealous of him in an attempt to embarrass him.

Mr Wilkins has since removed all mentions of an MBE and Open University degree from his online profiles.

Wow! Better be whiter than snowy white linen to stand for election at Illogan. Someone will be merrily digging for dirt!

Mr Wilkins is a self-confessed liar who is , in my opinion, an insignificant little man who lied to his electorate and Cornwall and Parish Council. He also told people he had an Open University degree to 'embarrass' someone - how does that work?! The only person he embarrassed is himself. It was worth noting that he does not mention being a policeman on his LinkedIn profile - is this another lie - what this space!

The Con. party hardly condemned Mr Wilkins (aka Walter Mitty) for lying to Cornwall council, his fabricated LinkedIn profile and his electorate instead they thanked him for all his hard work. How weak but we knew that already.

Well at least he has done the right thing and resigned, politically he was dead in the water anyway after the revelations. UKIP has nothing to do with this, but no doubt he would fit in well with the rest of the idiots at UKIP. Like KernowCarl, I will be voting on 22 May for anyone other then UKIP.

Not sure what UKip has to do with any of this this, though their cock-ups and 'misspeaks' seem to be legion at the moment. How many more times is Farage going to pop up on the telly saying 'We got it wrong' and manage to keep a straight face? I'll be turning out on 22 May, to vote for anyone other than UKip. Meanwhile, Terry has done the decent thing and fallen on his sword (which no doubt came in the post some years ago, along with his knighthood notification).

@miniman1 He's a Conservative (Con man). Another politician who thinks the electorate are daft.

Unbelievably it doesn't mention to which party Mr Wilkins belongs, but one thing is for sure, it wasn't UKIP or that fact would have been splashed all over the report. Just a small point wbchris, he put the medal away in a drawer -- not a draw.
