CORNWALL’S top women runners made national headlines at the weekend as both Miranda Heathcote and Emma Stepto produced outstanding performances.

Newquay-based Heathcote set the tone as she followed up her runaway win in the Cornwall Championships with a superb victory in the British & Irish Masters Cross Country Championships in Cardiff.

Less than 24 hours later Stepto was rewarded for her long trip from Camborne to Yorkshire for the Leeds Abbey Dash 10k road race with a scintillating new personal best of 33mins 23secs which earned her a bronze medal in the England Athletics Championships.

The time lifts Stepto to eighth in the UK Rankings in addition to her fourth place in the marathon and eighth in the half - and top at all three distances in the over 40s age category - an achievement that makes her the outstanding county runner of the year.

On his debut for England 51-year-old Cornwall AC runner Chris Harry, who lives at Drift near Penzance, raced to a superb victory in the over 50s race at the British & Irish Masters Cross Country Championships in Cardiff.
