Cornwall men’s golfers earned an impressive 11.5-3.5 Channel League win over Gwent at a sun-drenched Perranporth yesterday.
With three local players in the team and home advantage playing a part Cornwall’s top golfers continued their good form which saw them take runners up spot in the South West Inter Counties Matchplay Shield, as they maintained their challenge for further honours this season.
On a still, bright and very warm day, the morning went the way of Cornwall who won four out of the five foursomes to lead 4-1 at lunch.
The local pairing of Chris Fleming and Conor Wilson led the way with a 2&1 win followed by County Champion Joe Yorke & Matt Richards who won 4&3.
The pairing of Tom Fox & Joe Cruse won by two holes. The host club’s Sandy Kirton, on his Channel League recall to the team after a four year absence, was paired with Jon Hancock and they too won 4&3.
The only morning defeat for the Cornish saw Josh Greenaway & Richard Jasper beaten 3&1.
Cornwall eventually ran away with the afternoon singles by 7.5 – 2.5 with the only halved match coming from Fox.
Although there were defeats for Richards (2&1) and Greenaway (1 hole), three Cornish wins were provided by the local trio of Wilson (2up), Fleming (3&2) and Kirton who completed a very good return to the team in winning 6&5.
