The north and south coasts of Cornwall have been put on flood alert with strong winds, a tidal surge and large waves coupled with a high tide expected today.

The Environment Agency said the flood alert is targeted at locations with damage to defences, buildings and structures, which will be especially vulnerable.

Locations include Newlyn, Penzance, Porthleven, Mevagissey, Fowey, Looe, Seaton, Kingsand, and Plymouth, plus from Newquay to Bude on the north coast.

The time of high tide on Friday morning is between 03:38 at Newlyn and 04:43 at Plymouth with a North Westerly wind of up to Force 7 predicted.

Winds will be strongest in the far West of Cornwall.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “ Conditions in exposed locations will be dangerous so please remain a safe distance from coastal frontages.

“ Conditions will usually apply 2 to 4 hours either side of high tide.’’
