THE Cornish Nationalist Party (CPN) has regrouped with the aim of contesting future elections in the county.

The organisation is seeking to boost its 100-strong membership and looking for would-be candidates.

A meeting of the CPN executive in Bodmin also decided to reorganise its district and borough branches into three new regional associations in line with those implemented by Cornwall Council.

The CPN was formed in 1975 by Dr James Whetter from Gorran as a political party striving for self-government for Cornwall. It now wishes instead to support the formation of the council.

CNP secretary Androw Hawke, from Bodmin, said at a time of local government change in Cornwall, the party needed to look at its own organisation.

"We decided we needed to streamline in order to build strong foundations and a platform to contest elections in the future," he said.

"The CNP has been fully supportive of the new Cornish unitary authority as the way forward in governing Cornwall, and we have decided to show our support by restructuring in a way that mirrors Cornwall Council."

Mr Hawke said the party aimed to safeguard Cornish culture and the interests of its people but was not in favour of a Cornish Assembly.

"We have around 100 members in Cornwall, but also a worldwide membership including in Australia. We need to build it up and are looking for more people to join the party and stand for us in elections.

"The issues that effect the people of Cornwall are our issues, and we aim to do all we can for the people of Cornwall," he added.

He said that for the past few decades the party had been seen as simply a pressure group, with Mebyon Kernow the only politically registered party based in Cornwall.
