A CORNISH MP helped to hoist the flag of St Piran on top of a government building in London earlier today.
Stephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for St Austell & Newquay, was invited by the Secretary of State Eric Pickles MP to attend the raising of the flag at the Eland House headquarters of the Department for Communities and Local Government.
Stephen Williams, the Minister of State responsible for issues such as Cornish National Minority Status
and promotion of the Cornish Language, was also in attendance at this morning's event.
Mr Gilbert said he was thrilled to be asked to help raise the St Piran’s flag.
“Having campaigned for Cornish Minority Status, the promotion of the Cornish Language and defeated the Pasty Tax, raising the Cornish flag on a major Government department felt like a victory in itself,” he said.
“I’m grateful for the Secretary of State and Minister of State for attending as well, it shows they are taking the Duchy seriously and that they recognise our strong Celtic identity. I made sure I wished them both a happy St Piran’s Day from Cornwall.”
