A CONSULTATION period over the future of Poltair Community Hospital has started.

From today to February 10, people will be able to tell NHS Kernow and Peninsula Community Health their thoughts on the Penzance hospital and how services may be provided in the future.

Five options that people will be asked to consider have been drawn up with the help of patients, doctors, nurses, councillors and patient representatives.

The options that people are being asked to consider are:

2. Poltair Site: Outpatient, outreach, inpatient services – five beds (this option represents the closest

3. Poltair Site: Outpatient and outreach services only (increased capacity).

4. Relocation to West Cornwall Hospital (this option would mean the closure of Poltair Community Hospital).

5. Relocation to other local and / or community sites (this option would mean the closure of Poltair Community Hospital).

Neil Walden, a family GP in Marazion and NHS Kernow’s clinical lead in west Cornwall, said: “The five options that people are being asked to consider represent more than a year’s work with the community. We have listened to the public every step of the way and these five options are taken from what people have told us.

“We want everyone to get involved with this consultation, read the consultation document and consider which of the five options would best meet their health needs if they were using Poltair Community Hospital now and in the future.

“It’s really important that people understand the options and have their say to ensure their thoughts are counted. I want to reassure everyone that no decision has been made about the future of the hospital. We will listen to everyone’s views and only once the consultation has ended will NHS Kernow’s Governing Body made a decision.”

There are four public events taking place during December and January to help people reach a decision.

On Wednesday, a public meeting will be held at St John’s Hall, Penzance from 6 to 7.30pm. People will have the opportunity to hear about the consultation options and to ask any questions.

There will also be three drop-in sessions for people to talk to staff from NHS Kernow and Peninsula Community Health. All three drop-in sessions take place from 4 to 8pm.

Monday, December 16 at the WI Hall, Church Street, St Just.

Wednesday, January 8 at St Ives Leisure Centre, Trenwith Burrows.

Wednesday, January 15 at Committee Room 1, One Stop Shop, St Clare, Penzance.

Once the consultation has, everyone’s submissions will be evaluated by doctors, nurses, councillors and patient representatives to identify the preferred option(s).

NHS Kernow and Peninsula Community Health will then complete further work to deliver a detailed analysis of the preferred option (s) to support the recommendations that will be made to NHS Kernow’s governing body. Details of this will be made nearer the time.

Consultation documents are available from NHS Kernow; GP practices in west Cornwall; libraries; community hospitals; pharmacies; council one-stop shops; West Cornwall Hospital and online at www.kernowccg.nhs.uk/poltair
