Connor Downs School is celebrating after winning a grant from the People’s Millions lottery fund.

The school was in competition with other community projects to win the £50,000, but secured the grant thanks to votes from members of the public.

Groups of staff, volunteers and pupils campaigned hard at venues across west Cornwall and Truro to try to gain support for their Cultivating Futures project, which will see an outdoor education centre built at the school.

Head teacher, Susan Costello, said the support the school recived from the public on the day of voting was both “humbling and overwhelming.”

She added: “Our children were a credit to their families and our school and the way we have worked together on this project has been inspirational. This bodes well for the future success of Cultivating Futures. I am incredibly proud to be head teacher at this family school in a wonderful community.”

Without the donation from People’s Millions, which is run in conjunction with ITV Westcountry, it would have taken the school 10 years to establish the outdoor plans.

The school was visited by ITV Westcountry presenters throughout the process who commented on the community feeling the school has.

Jacquie Bird, presenter, said: “I've been in a lot of schools. Rarely have I been to one as warm and welcoming as Connor Downs Primary School. From the moment I walked through the front door, I was struck by the great community feel of the school, everyone seemed part of it, from the children to the teachers to all of the many visitors.”

Two teachers at the school are set to have their legs waxed next week as part of a pledge to be brave if the school were successful in the competition.

Connor Downs School would like to thank everyone who voted for them and helped with the campaign.
