Second chance for dog 'with days to live'

A POORLY pooch has been given a second chance thanks to the dedication of volunteers and staff at a Hayle animal charity.

Wilbur the Staffordshire bull terrier had only days to live when he was taken in as a stray from near Lostwithiel, with a huge cyst on his leg.

Dog wardens hit a blank wall trying to get him a place in re-homing centres because they were all full and poor Wilbur was due to be put to sleep.

Luckily the National Animal Welfare Trust's (NAWT) Wheal Alfred Kennels in Hayle were able to step in when they received a desperate phone call for help.

Centre manager, Louise Clarke, said: "We were very lucky and had managed to shuffle some spaces about to make room for Wilbur so in his hour of need he was transported to Hayle.

"We knew he had a lump on his leg but we were not expecting the size that it was."

Wilbur needs surgery which will be quite tricky due to the size of the lump and the position on his leg.

He has an appointment to visit a local vets, AVS, where they will assess him and provide a quote for how much the operation will cost.

Louise said NAWT had a non-destruct policy and would not euthanise an animal because it needed medical attention.

She said: "NAWT will go the extra mile for Wilbur as he is such a friendly boy, with such a soft nature just wanting cuddles. There is no moaning or groaning carrying this huge lump around. I can't imagine how he must feel.

"We are seeing more and more animals needing medical treatment coming through our doors, with lumps and bumps, dentals and chronic skin conditions. We can only assume that their owners have not been able to afford the vet's fees. We only wish that poor dogs like Wilbur had been handed in sooner as he must have been suffering with the lump on his leg for quite a long while."
