A RUGBY player has been left with serious “life-changing” injuries after he was punched to the floor and kicked repeatedly in the head after a night out.

Luke Johnson, 21, winger for Camborne Rugby Club, was attacked on his way home from the Zone Nightclub in Redruth after celebrating his brother’s 23rd birthday.

Police said the “vicious and unprovoked” assault left him with potentially life-changing facial injuries.

Luke, from Redruth, told the West Briton how four of his front teeth were knocked out while his attackers kicked him in the head after being knocked to the ground.

He was taken by ambulance to Royal Cornwall Hospital and released three hours later.

Part of his skull above the teeth has been fractured and his eye socket was severely bruised.

Luke, who also plays cricket for Troon Cricket Club, said if it was not for a person in a nearby property who shouted at the attackers to stop, it could have been a lot worse.

He said: “I am still a little shocked at the moment. I wasn’t expecting the attack at all.

“Playing rugby you kind of know when things are going to kick off. This group of three guys were shouting at us.

“We turned around to see what it was all about, but I grabbed my mate and walked away from the situation.

“It was then that I was attacked.”

His friend was also set upon but is understood to have less serious injuries.

“I didn’t even see them coming. I’ve lost feeling along my top lip and am wearing a gum shield, eating’s a little difficult at the moment. I hope they get caught, they deserve it,” added Luke.

He will be out of action for Camborne for up to a month while his injuries heal.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The attack took place at about 2.40am on Friday on Foundry Row towards Chapel Street.

Detective Constable Ryan Parker, from Camborne police, said: “It was a vicious, unprovoked attack on two men.

The main attacker is described as 5ft 4in to 5ft 5in tall, stocky and muscular in build, with close-shaved, dark hair and a clean-shaven face.

“He is believed to be in his thirties. The other two offenders were taller and slimmer, aged in their mid-twenties.”

The offenders ran off in the direction of Redruth town centre.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detective constable Parker at Camborne police station by calling 101 quoting crime reference AC/14/564 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
