THE Mayor of Camborne has announced plans to run for the Member of Parliament (MP) for Camborne and Redruth constituency at the next General Election.

Mayor of Camborne cllr Mike Champion, hopes to gain a seat in parliament for Cornwall political party, Mebyon Kernow at the General Election in May 2015.

Cllr Champion has been a member of the town council for the last six years.

Speaking at last week’s MK Conference, he thanked members in the constituency for their support, and stated that he was standing for parliament because of his love for Cornwall, its proud history, culture and all its people.

He said: “I have the honour of being the Mayor of Camborne, a town with a history second to none. Yet I can see how successive Westminster governments have condemned the people of what was once a centre of world excellence for engineering and mining, to a succession of low-paid, low-skilled part-time jobs.

“What has happened in Camborne is reflected throughout Cornwall.

“I do not believe however that we should simply sit at the Tamar holding out the begging bowl, asking for a few more crumbs from the rich man’s table. Instead, I will take the fight directly to the Westminster parties, who have subjected Cornwall to years of broken promises and underfunding, considering our economy to consist of little more than cheap holidays and cream teas.”

He also pledged that his campaign would focus on both the need for social justice and to protect the environment of Cornwall.

He added: “I come from a left-wing background, and I am proud to call myself a socialist because I believe in social justice, decent public services, and a fair society for all. That will be a major plank of my election campaign, for without a decent society we cannot make progress as a nation.

“We are the guardians of this land and we must exercise those responsibilities wisely. It is criminal that high grade farmland is used for building when future generations will need it for food production.”

Truth is,unless you're an independant, your parties needs come before the needs of the Cornish people. We need councilors and MP's that serve the people, not serve their own needs and wants. But people will insist on voting for gangs to run Britain.

Why do MK do this? Why do they not concentrate their efforts and finances on getting one candidate, (Dick Cole, the only one with any chance,) a seat. The last general election their best result was in the St Austell and Newquay seat, where they came fourth, with 4.2% of the votes. In the other seats contested they achieved; North Cornwall: 5th place, (last) 1.1% of votes, −2.1% South Cornwall: 6th place (last) 1.3% of votes, −0.4% Truro and Falmouth: 5th place (out of 6 candidates)2.1% of votes, −0.4% Camborne and Redruth: 5th place (out of 6 candidates) 1.4% of votes +1.4% St Ives 7th (last) 0.8% of votes, +0.8% Overall they gained 1.9% of votes cast. All Mebyon Kernow candidates lost their deposits. Putting Mike "32 votes" Champion up for election as MP is a waste of time, money and effort. (The 2011 by-election in Camborne North for Cornwall unitary council on 13 January was notable for the Labour and Mebyon Kernow (MK) result. Mike Champion for Mebyon Kernow got 32 votes.)

Well said josdave, the problem is the teaching as well as the learning. It's also nice that the guy has some aspirations, I hope though that he is able to afford his lost deposit though, as I expect it is unlikely that he will gain the necessary votes to keep it.10 out 0f 10 for giving it a go though. @ Truro-England, you are of course entitled to your opinions, but some of the policies MK have are actually quite forward thinking. MK have come a long way over the years, it would be good to see a minority party (with the exception of the idiots from UKIP) giving the main parties a run for their money.

Don't journalists learn English anymore? It should be "bids" or "will bid" to become "a" Mebyon Kenow MP at "the" next election. Very sloppy English.
