A PREVIOUSLY homeless man has been crowned a local hero thanks to his green-fingered skills.

Brian Hosking, from Camborne, was presented with a shield after winning Cornwall in Bloom's Local Hero Award for his role and dedication in creating his garden.

Councillor Edwina Hannaford, chairman of Cornwall in Bloom, said: "I would like to thank Mr Hosking and all the other dedicated, green-fingered volunteers for their hard work and encourage others to submit their handiwork for the Cornwall in Bloom awards."

Mr Hosking was supported by Coastline Housing's homelessness service, which helped him get a place on a horticulture course run by Duchy College and discover his passion for gardening.

He previously lived at Coastline's supported accommodation where he tended to his garden daily. Mr Hosking has since moved into independent accommodation but continues to cultivate vegetables.
