CAMPAIGNING students from Cornwall College have stepped onto the front line in the war against sexually transmitted infections after being recruited by the NHS to launch a media crusade.

Posters created by media students, from the Camborne campus, will be used at clinics and in colleges around Cornwall to promote safe sex and highlight the work of the £3.2 million sexual health hub, based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

Urging people to get tested for sexually transmitted infections, the posters use a blend of humour and factual information to get their message out there.

Matt Sharp, from the sexual health hub, said: “It makes sense to get the students involved because the campaign is aimed at their age group. They know what’s relevant to them and how to get the message across.

“I’ve been really impressed with their ideas; there’s a lot of humour as well as a serious message. We’ll be using the finished posters in colleges across the county.”

Second year student Aphra Perring, on the Extended Diploma in Media Production at Cornwall College, Camborne, said it was great working to a brief for a high-profile client.

The 17-year-old from Carharrack, near Redruth, said: “It’s been a great challenge to work for a real client. This is about working out the best way of driving home an important message and I think we’ve come up with some really striking posters.”

Very few people who are faithful to their marriage partner get STDs it seems. Perhaps it would be a good move to encourage young people to look forward to a "clean" partnership for life. Has anyone ever thought of teaching self control and monogamy before . Just a thought.
