A wounded burglar ran off when a woman struck him with a brick as he tried to enter her home in Wadebridge.
The incident happened at about 7.15pm last Friday evening at Trevanson when the woman arrived home and saw a man attempting to enter her house via a side door.
She challenged the male and as he came towards her she picked up a brick and struck him on the back of his head before he made off.
He is described as white, in his late 30's, is of chunky build, about 5ft 10ins tall and possibly balding.
Detective Constable Sarah Northcott of Bodmin CID said: " Previously the lady had left home and had seen the male on the land outside her house smoking a cigarette. She returned home quite quickly as she felt he was suspicious and found him trying to get in.
"We would like to hear from anyone who has information about this man. Perhaps they know of someone who came home with a head wound or unexplained shoulder injury,'' she said.
They should contact Bodmin CID on 101, quoting crime reference BW/12/842.
