A BUDE man has been arrested on suspicion of administering a noxious substance following the death of a man in Bideford.
A man who was found collapsed in the toilets of the Pannier Market on Monday, police confirmed.
Emergency services were called to the market, just off the high street, by concerned paramedics at around 3.30pm on Monday.
Efforts to save the man, who is believed to be in his twenties and local to the area, were unsuccessful and he was later pronounced dead in hospital.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said a 32-year-old man from the Bude area had been arrested on suspicion of administering a noxious substance in connection with the death.
He was taken into police custody in Barnstaple Police Station to help police with their inquiries. He has since been released on bail until March 25.
Formal identification of the deceased man has not yet been carried out.
A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out in the next couple of days.
An eyewitness at the scene, who wished to remain anonymous, said the area was completely cordoned off to the public on Monday afternoon and said police officers could be seen in the vicinity of the toilets.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed an investigation into the man’s death was underway.
