A FIRE at a derelict hotel in the centre of Redruth is being treated as suspected arson.

Fire crews from Redruth, Camborne and Falmouth were called to the former Hollies Hotel on the corner of Station Hill and Cross Street at 6.20am on Friday.

Penryn Street was closed for more than one hour while a total of 30 firefighters, many wearing breathing apparatus, tackled the blaze.

The fire service said the four-storey building was searched and no one was inside.

Crews worked quickly to save the building and stop the fire from spreading to nearby properties. It was put out by 7.30am. Police are investigating the incident, which is being treated as suspected arson.

Lodge and Thomas estate agents, which was marketing the empty property valued at £200,000, said the fire was believed to have started when curtains were set alight.

The agents said it caused minor damage to the site, which has planning permission to be converted into five apartments with basement-level offices and store area.

They also confirmed it had been sold subject to contract, was targeted by vandals in the past, but is now expected to be refurbished.
