A GRENADE found by a walker on Gwithian beach has been donated by bomb disposal experts.
A man called the coastguard after finding the ordnance at around 2.30pm yesterday.
Unable to wait for the services to arrive, he picked up the grenade and placed it under sandbags near the dunes to keep it hidden from sight.
The coastguard have warned people not to pick up ordnance they find on the beach but to call the emergency services instead.
Upon receiving the call the area was later cordoned off by the local coastguards.
A spokesman from Falmouth Coastguard said personnel from the Southern Dive Unit at Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth were called in to detonate the grenade safely at around 6.20pm.
The spokesman added: “If members of the public find ordnance on the beach then do not pick up. This person did but we advise people to call us or the police.”
