A BODY has been found on a beach in Porthleven this morning after being spotted by a member of the public.

According to the Coastguard it was seen at 9am and has now been retrieved. A spokesman for the service said just before 10.30am: "I can confirm that a body was recovered."

Coxswain at Penlee Lifeboat Station, Patch Harvey, also reported a body was seen in the water just off the shoreline earlier today but could not confirm anything more. No more information on who the person might be is available at this time.

In the early hours of New Year's Day a man, said to be from Guildford in Surrey, was washed out to sea by a big wave off Loe Bar, not far from Porthleven.

Rescue teams from Penlee, Mullion and across Mount's Bay have been involved in an extensive search since the emergency services were called. Many efforts were hampered due to poor weather conditions.

I would like to point out that (yet again) the main coastguard team, first on scene, and the team which recovered the body was the local PORTHLEVEN volunteers. For some reason our local team never get a mention whereas the surrounding teams do. As for not entering the water, you can't blame tourists for not knowing everything about the sea. They have leisure centres with wave machines and think that the sea is just like that. You can't blame them for not knowing about something they've never experienced before. It needs a lot more warning signs. At night, in the dark you simply can't see the two small signs there, like Flatpack said, it should have signs along its length and I don't think it will put off tourists at all, there are plenty of safe beaches and it's only fair that they should be warned of the dangers. In London there are signs in every tube station saying "Do not touch any rail" and that doesn't put off the tourists!

Loe bar is and will always be the beach that frightens me the most I'm not local I'm from London but we and my whole family have holidayed In and around porthleven for around 50 years 3 generations of us and we would never enter the sea at loe bar I think it should have signs but no people in the water is a massive sign on its own. Poor fella either way

They say Loe Bar takes a soul every seven years. As a local fisherman I have seen how deadly this beach is, it is notorious for its massive unexpected shore dumps, and the pea gravel underfoot just caves in and sucks you under. Even in calm weather I have seen waves appear from nowhere and you can hear the suck of the ocean as it churns the gravel under the surface, there is no escape, not even for the strongest swimmer. This Beach should have skull and cross bones signs along it's full length. As locals we know the danger, but visitors have no idea . It may not look good for tourism, but for heavens sake we need those signs. LOE BAR IS A KILLER BEACH !
