St Blazey 0 Bodmin Town 2
Bodmin warmed up for their big FA Carlsberg Vase tie by producing an impressive performance and result at Blaise Park on Tuesday night in a hastily-arranged Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division game.
Goals by right back Lee Doel (41 minutes) and striker Glynn Hobbs (62) gave Bodmin the three points which extended their lead at the top of the table to four points from Plymouth Parkway.
Only four days before the Vase date with Northern League Ashington at Priory Park, Bodmin sought this rearranged league game because manager Darren Gilbert wanted his players to get some match practice.
And it was a good test against a Blazey side who are a match for most teams in the premier division this season. Indeed Bobby Oaten's men would have taken a 12th minute lead but for a magnificent close range save by Kevin Miller from George Swain's fierce shot.
Equally as impressive was the follow-up tackle from Doel which prevented Lewis Coombes putting the rebound into the net.
Gradually Bodmin took control of the midfield battle and Olly Brokenshire stung the fingers of Blazey keeper Dave Painter in the 23rd minute with a rasping left foot shot which Painter somehow forced over the bar.
Best move of the first half came on the half hour as left back Luke Rundle, playing against his former club, raced clear along the left and produced an excellent cross to the far post where Adam Carter cushioned a header into the path of Brokenshire, who sent his close range shot just over.
But Bodmin took the lead four minutes before the break. Luke Doddridge's corner from the left caused problems in the six yard box and as Blazey defenders attempted to clear, Doel forced the ball over the line with the home side claiming that keeper Painter had been fouled.
Bodmin continued to be on the front foot in the second half and doubled their lead in the 62nd minute. Craig Swiggs, returning to his best form, found Doddridge along the left and he slipped the ball inside to Hobbs, who passed his shot into the net from 15 yards.
Bodmin came through the match without any major injury concerns, although Doel damaged a couple of fingers on his left hand in the goalmouth scramble which led to his goal and also felt a slight muscle strain before being replaced by Sam Matthews in the 66th minute.
