Bodmin Town 5, Launceston 1
BODMIN Town scored three times in the second half to earn a 5-2 victory over North Cornwall rivals Launceston in the FA Carlsberg Vase second qualifying round tie at Priory Park.
The teams were level at 2-2 at the break but Darren Gilbert’s half-time rollicking had the desired effect on his Bodmin players and they ran out comfortable winners.
They will now be away to Sherborne or Shepton Mallet on Saturday October 2.
Launceston stunned the home side by taking a fifth minute lead with a header by Dominic Richardson from a Danny Murdoch corner, only seconds after Richardson had been denied by a brilliant save from Kevin Miller.
Bodmin were level after 17 minutes when a long throw from Dave Hollow was headed against his own bar by Chris Saunders, and from the rebound Huw Morgan swooped to score from close range.
Five minutes later Bodmin were ahead when a superb dipping cross from the right by Lewis Reed found Steve Colwell stooping to send a glancing header into the far corner.
But Launceston responded quickly and after Hollow had naively tripped Carl Aldridge on the edge of the penalty area, John Harrison made it 2-2 from the resulting spot kick.
Danny O’Hagan and Chris Luxton (twice) were denied by the woodwork before Bodmin retook the lead in the 59th minute.
A high cross from wide on the right by Morgan hung in the air at the back post where O’Hagan jumped higher than Launceston goalkeeper Gary Turner to head into the net.
Turner wasn’t happy with referee Stephen Paul’s decision to allow the goal, and had to be restrained by several of his team-mates before the game could restart.
It was O’Hagan’s last action of the game as he was replaced by Luke Hodge for a last half hour which Bodmin dominated and produced their best football of the tie.
It was 4-2 in the 72nd minute when new signing Danny Bance fed a ball out to Colwell on the right. His chipped cross to the far post saw a Luxton shot turned against the bar by Turner, but Hodge was on hand to touch the ball over the line.
Two minutes later came the goal of the game. Reed broke clear from defence and found Ollie Brokenshire on the left. His ball forward was headed down by Hodge into the path of Luxton who fired a sweet low drive from 18 yards into the net.
