Bodmin Town stretched their unbeaten run to eight games and moved up to seventh in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division table on Wednesday night with a 4-3 victory over Torpoint Athletic at Priory Park.

But the reigning champions made hard work of these three points after establishing a 4-1 lead four minutes into the second half.

All credit to Torpoint, who were the better side in the last half hour and came very close to clawing back a point.

They will be regretting their poor start, when some awful defending led to Bodmin racing into a 2-0 lead after only seven minutes.

Tom Chambers opened the scoring with a free header at the far post from Jimmy Alexander’s corner from the left, and a minute later Luke Hodge doubled the lead, waltzing through Torpoint’s square defence to finish with aplomb.

Bodmin were well on top and it was a surprise that it took them until the 35th minute to get their third goal, with Matt Drummond finishing off from close range after more poor defending by Torpoint from an Alexander corner.

In the last minute of a first half dominated by Bodmin, Torpoint pulled a goal back with new signing Sam Cooper, from Tavistock, heading in Darren Hicks’ corner.

But their hopes of a comeback appeared to be doomed four minutes into the second half when a slip by Lee Bevan let in Sam Matthews along the right and his inch perfect cross was met by Hodge with a superb half volley to make it 4-1.

Bodmin then missed several opportunities to add further goals before Torpoint finally came to life with a Hicks finish from close range in the 64th minute giving them a glimmer of hope.

Bodmin goalkeeper Kevin Miller pulled off a stunning save to deny Danny Brook and then Callum Martindale fired a shot wide with the goal gaping as the home side looked visibly shaken.

Torpoint finally got a deserved third goal in the final minute of normal time with a brilliant 25-yard finish from substitute Jack Alexander which left Miller rooted to his line.

In the end Bodmin were relieved to hear the final whistle.
