A WORLD-famous beatbox artist is among those heading to Penzance next month to give his services for free for a ShelterBox fundraiser.
The Petebox, who has toured his cutting edge show around the UK and Europe and recorded adverts for Honda cars and Movistar mobile phones, will be the star attraction at TheboXFactor, a night of music and comedy, at the Ritz, Penzance on Saturday, November 30.
The evening is the brainchild of Mounts Bay school-educated brothers Dan and Jon Levine, who is now living and working in London.
About 18 months ago, Jon volunteered to become a member of the ShelterBox Response Team (SRT), delivering aid to crisis-hit areas of the world through the form of the familiar green boxes which contain a tent and many other items to help families stricken by disaster – blankets, a cooker, tools and eating utensils.
And, after a three-day selection process and a further 10 days’ training on the Lizard and Dartmoor, he went on his first deployment to the Lebanon this May to help refugees affected by the civil strife in Syria.
John said it was an amazing experience.
“I know it’s a bit of a cliché but going out there made me realise how lucky we are,” he said.
“The human spirit is incredible – people are going through the most horrendous experiences, losing everything in their lives and yet they pick themselves up and get on with their lives.
“We (Jon was part of a three-man ShelterBox team) were still being offered coffee and tea by people with smiles on their faces.”
As a result of his experiences in the Lebanon, Jon decided he wanted to give something back to the charity.
“I felt like making a commitment to ShelterBox to thank them for the opportunities they’ve given me and in return for all the training and the trust they’ve invested in me.
“I also wanted to specifically put on an event which targets the 18 to 30 age group.”
The result is TheboXFactor event when The Petebox will be joined by Alpine entertainer Mikey Gray and local house music supremo Ry Spencley while brother Dan will compere and perform his own comedy songs.
Dan and Jon have also commandeered local artist Mat McIvor to design a poster for the event and the original will be framed and raffled on the night – other prizes include a painting by Luke Frost and a meal for two at the Coldstreamer, Gulval.
Tickets are available from: The Old Grammar School, Truro; Mr Bs, Hayle; Sky’s Diner, St Ives; Jordan’s Cafe, Marazion; and Southshore, The Crown Inn, Humphry Davy and The Vault, all in Penzance.
