FIREFIGHTERS were kept busy over the weekend, responding to a variety of call outs in the Helston area, mostly caused by the extreme weather conditions.

A crew from St Keverne attended an incident at North Corner in Coverack on Friday, when a tree brought down power cable arcing. The fire unit cordoned off the area around the cable until Western Power Distribution engineers arrived.

In the early hours of Saturday, an engine from Mullion Community Fire Station attended a report of smoke seen in the distance.

On arrival the crew discovered power cables had been brought down by the wind and were draped over a shed containing ponies.

The cable had also started a small fire involving a nearby stack of tyres.

The fire crew ensured the safety of the ponies, making sure the fire did not spread until Western Power Distribution engineers arrived to isolate the power supply.

Crews were also called to Pengersick Estate, Praa Sands and Garro Lane in Mullion on Saturday to deal with further cable problems.
