A MAN had a "miraculous" escape after the van he was driving was crushed by a huge falling tree on the A3083 near Culdrose.

The incident happened on Monday afternoon and caused the road to be closed in both directions between the B3293 junction at Culdrose Airfield and the B3296 Meaver Road junction at Penhale, affecting traffic between Helston and the Lizard.

Police and fire crews were in attendance and a spokesperson for the fire service described the escape as "a miracle" and said the driver is "very lucky" to have avoided injury.

"Fortunately when the tree fell, large branches came down around the main body of the van, leaving the driver unharmed," the spokesperson said.

The road was closed overnight and the tree will be cut up and removed later.
